Great Britain's starting netminder returned to Britain this season after two seasons on the continent. Lyle spent last season icing with HC Morzine of France and the acquisition of the long-time Cardiff Devil gives coach Ed Courtenay an extra import out-skater to play with.
Lyle debuted with his native Devils in 1994 back in the days of the British National League (BNL) and was quickly recognised as an outstanding up and coming goaltender. He was named to the Superleague (ISL) All-Star team as the Devils swept to the playoff crown in 1997, also being named as player of the year.
Two seasons later the Devils repeated the feat with Lyle again at the forefront of their triumph and again named to the All-Star team. Aside from a brief spell with Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Lyle was a one club man until he joined Manchester Storm in 2001. He notched up a 90% save percentage in his first season at the MEN Arena and was retained for the following season, but as the Storm folded six games into the 2002/03 season, Lyle moved back to Cardiff and starred once again. He spent a season in Bracknell before moving to the Continent in 2005. He was signed by the Coors Giants from Basingstoke after an unhappy start to the season resulted in him asking for his release from the Bison.
