After an outstanding season capped off with a selection to the Great Britain International Senior Men's Ice Hockey Squad, Graeme Walton put pen to paper and signed on for his fifth season with the Coors Belfast Giants. Walton was highly sought after from a handful of Elite league teams, particularly after a superb tournament at the World Championships in which he turned many doubters into believers that a homegrown player from Northern Ireland deserved to be on the National Team.
Last season with the Giants, Walton stepped up into the top four defensive rotation, playing the entire season and logging a great deal of ice time with defensive partner and current General Manager Todd Kelman. He impressed his teammates and his coach Ed Courtenay who had the confidence to play the season out with four defensemen, three imports and Walton who earned his increased ice time all season long.
Kelman had this to say about Walton, "Graeme had a great year with us and finally got the opportunity to show us what he could do, a chance that he definitely made the most of last season. I was extremely proud of him when he was selected to the GB Team and was overjoyed for him when he performed so well at the International Level." "Wally is truly a Northern Ireland sporting hero now, someone that all of Belfast should be proud of. Being the first player ever selected to the top flight Great Britain National Squad is a huge accolade for him, and I have every belief that he will continue his steady play with the Giants and the GB Squad for years to come."
A stay-at-home defender, Graeme's first job is to clear his own zone and he does it like a pro. Belfast born Graeme made history in the 2003 season by becoming the first Northern Irish born Giant to register a point. Walton has demonstrated a great talent beyond his years and fantastic focus when coming up against the league's top forwards and has showed that he has the talent to become a top defenseman in the future. Walton played his entire minor hockey with the Castlereagh Knights before he then joined Giants team-mates Mark Morrison and Chris McGimpsey at the Solway Sharks in the Scottish National League. This led the way to his first professional contract with the Belfast Giants in 2003. |
